In a parallel move, this being a devolved matter, the Scottish Government launched a public consultation on 2 September 2011 (closing on 9 December 2011) about the possible introduction in Scotland of religious ceremonies for civil partnerships and of same-sex marriages.
This naturally prompted some debate in Scotland, as part of which the SCOTTISH DAILY MAIL commissioned Progressive Scottish Opinion to run a single question on its Scottish omnibus poll for 16-18 November 2011. 1,233 Scots aged 18 and over who were members of the YouGov panel were interviewed online.
50% of Scots agreed that ‘gay couples should be allowed to marry in Scotland’s churches’, with 36% disagreeing and 15% uncertain. 18-24s were heavily in favour (71%), almost double the proportion of over-55s. There were no breaks by religious affiliation.
