In his budget on Wednesday the Chancellor duly announced the temporary suspension of the Sunday Trading Act 1994 for the period of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. In a post-budget poll by YouGov for THE SUN on 21 and 22 March 59% of 1,835 Britons said that they supported the suspension. This compares with 66% in a differently-worded question in the pre-budget poll noted in BRIN’s original post. 29% opposed the plan, with 12% undecided. For the full data table, see:

A second post-budget poll on the Sunday trading issue was conducted by ICM Research for the SUNDAY TELEGRAPH on 22 and 23 March 2012. The sample comprised 1,000 adult Britons aged 18 and over interviewed by telephone. 37% of respondents said that the current Sunday trading restrictions should be scrapped permanently, not just for the period of the Olympics and Paralympics. The figure is comparable with the 35% obtained by YouGov in its pre-budget survey of 19 March. Men, the 18-34s, and Scots were most in favour, according to ICM. Support for the status quo on Sunday shopping hours (56%) peaked among women (63%) and the over-65s (64%). Detailed findings are at:
