These are interesting figures. I have many years professional social work experience in adoption and fostering. Inter-faith adoption raises many issues, not least for the child to be adopted, whose welfare is always the paramount consideration. In matching, the religion of the child (which in law is assumed to be the religion of the birth parents)has to be given due regard as well as all the other factors that must be considered. Most adoptions in the UK are not of babies but of older children who may already have a strong sense of cultural, ethnic and religious identity. Birth parents sometimes have strong views about the religion in which they wish their child to be brought up, even if they are non-pratising themselves. It can be important for the success of adoption that the birth parents have confidence in the suitability of the adopters. Some form of post-adoption contact for child with birth family is often a feature of modern adoptive situations.
