In a related development, a YouGov poll for Stonewall published on 12 June 2012 found that 71% of all Britons favoured religious institutions being allowed to conduct same-sex marriages if they wished to. This was the same number as supported Government plans to extend civil marriage to same-sex couples, although the figure was smaller (58%) among those professing a religion, thereby providing some credence to the widespread belief (held by 61%) that religious attitudes were a cause of continuing public prejudice against lesbians, gays and bisexuals. Moreover, people with faith were 10% less likely to think it right to tackle such prejudice than those without religion (57% versus 67%), and twice as likely (13% against 7%) to agree with the statement ‘homosexuality is morally unacceptable in all circumstances’. At the same time, Stonewall put a positive spin on the results regarding religion in its LIVING TOGETHER report. Fieldwork for the study predated the launch of the public consultation on equal civil marriage, being undertaken online between 25 November and 5 December 2011 among 2,047 adults aged 18 and over.
