Catholic Statistics
I can confirm that the whole basis of Catholic statistics is totally unreliable. In most parishes no count of Mass attendance is taken. When pressed for a figure, the priest will usually come up with a guess that is not based on any count. Battisms and Marriages may be a little more reliable, but still based on recollection rather than a count.
The trouble is that there is no, or very little, culture that attaches any importance to this information. The attitude in many cases is: “What does it matter?”
In many other cases, there is a deliberate policy of under estimating Mass attendance, because the charge levied on each parish by the diocese is related to declared Mass attendance.
So it is all pretty hopeless.
